Dudjom Rinpoche

Guru Padmasambhava once said: “At a time when the Tibetan people lost their homeland and wonder about suffering, and the Dharma lineage is facing destruction, my manifestation by the name Jigdral Yeshe Dorje will appear in this world to uphold the Dharma flag.

The Birth of Jigdral Yeshe Dorje
In the morning of the 10th day of the 6th moon of the water dragon year (1904), amidst auspicious and peaceful atmosphere, Jigdral Yeshe Dorje was born in South-eastern Tibet, at one of four Guru padmasambhava’s holy sites, “PEMA GUI”. His father Lobu Tenzin was a tulku of the Kathok monastery and a descendent of the local royal family. His mother Namgyal Drolma was descendent of the renowned terton Ratna Lingpa. His blood lineage originated from King Trisong Deutsen, an emanation of Manjushri. This lineage of the of human and deva carries great blessings and is extremely rare.

Rinpoche’s previous life was Dudjom Lingpa, the first Dudjom Rinpoche who revealed the Dudjom New Treasure. Guru Rinpoche once instructed him to go to the south, at one of four holy sites, “PEMA GUI” where he would obtain precious terma. However, condition was not right and this did not materialize. Before his parinirvana Dudjom Lingpa instructed his disciples to go to “PEMA GUI” and said: ‘you go first and I’ll come later!’ Accordingly his chief disciple went to “PEMA GUI” and waited for the return of his Lama.

Before his passing away, Dudjom Lingpa also prophesied that he would reach “PEMA GUI” before his disciples. Dudjom Lingpa passed away in 1904 at the age of 68 and was reborn in “PEMA GUI” in the same year as Jigdral Yeshe Dorje, the second Dudjom Rinpoche.

At the age of three, when Rinpoche met the search party led by Dudjom Lingpa’s chief disciple and several yogis, Rinpoche could recognize each and every one of them by calling their names and knowing their characters individually. This amazed them all and everyone has no doubt that the boy is the incarnation of Dudjom Lingpa.

The second Dudjom Rinpoche is an emanation of Guru rinpoche. He is one holy master who holds the rich lineage of nyingmapa and is an awareness-holder of lineage of nyingmapa. He is a supreme master of great perfection who has supreme realization. He is also a great terton named in the terma. The terma revealed by him had been widely propagated and practiced. All the major nyingmapa lineage holders of mindrolling, kathog, payul, dzogchen, etc recognize Dudjom Rinpoche to be the supreme head of the nyingmapa lineage.

Dudjom Lingpa himself said: “Whoever has any connection with the second Dudjom Rinpoche, whether meeting him in person, remembering him or touched by him shall be liberated and shall in future lives take rebirth in the kingdom of Shambala.” (samaya-breakers are excepted).

Propagation of the Dharma
Dudjom Rinpoche holds the full lineage teachings of the Nyingmapa, is a great terton of the present time as well as an authoritative teacher of great perfection. Dudjom Rinpoche is a representation of Guru Rinpoche and is teacher to many renowned tulkus. Rinpoche is widely accepted in Tibet as an authority in the authentication of realization of the nature of mind and has great power of blessings. Dudjom Rinpoche’s main Dharma activities are centered in central Tibet. Apart from spreading the Mindrolling lineage, Rinpoche also built temples and Dharma centers in (Chu Ling), Kongpo in southern Tibet, (Pulle), etc. Through the glorious lights of his realization and knowledge he quickly became well known throughout Tibet.
When Dudjom Rinpoche was giving teachings in SamYe Temple near Lhasa, the then Taklung Tsetrul Rinpoche, Trulshik Rinpoche, Dorje Tsal Rinpoche, Mingyur Rinpoche and many other great lamas were there receiving teachings, empowerments and transmissions of Rinchen Terzod, Great Perfection, etc. Many lamas came from afar and usually numbered in ten of thousands gathered around Rinpoche for teachings.
Whenever Dudjom Rinpoche was giving teachings in Tibet or India, many lamas from the two big monasteries of Mindrolling and Kathog like Chiktsal Senge Dorje Rinpoche, Shuwu Rinpoche were always there to receive teachings. As such Rinpoche has a huge number of disciples and followers.
